In 1792 the French revolution was supported by radicals in England. The Duke of Brunswick was the Austrian commander of the European army that invaded France in 1792 to suppress the revolution and restore the French monarchy. The failure of this attempt is celebrated here. Kennington Common, now Kennington Park was a large open space where large crowds gathered at times of political uprest and where public proclamations were also given.
