Perambulation of Clapham Common. From C.Smith’s ‘Actual Survey of the Road from London to Brighthelmston’, 1800. This map shows clearly that Clapham was an early suburb, fashionable from the late seventeenth century, the roads surrounding the common being occupied by local gentry and wealthy business men. Some of the famous names of the time included Henry Thornton and William Wilberforce, who both had houses on the west side, where members of the ‘Clapham Sect’ and campaigned against the slave trade; the banker Robert Barclay on the north side and the eccentric scientist Henry Cavendish, who had a large house on the south side. Holy Trinity Church is prominent on the eastern edge of the common, shown at the bottom of the picture.
