This photograph is centred on Waterloo Station. The station had been enlarged in stages and by 1922 had 21 platforms and a new frontage dedicated as a war memorial. Notable buildings in the area include the General Lying In Hospital for women in York Road built in 1828; the Royal Waterloo Hospital for children built in 1905; and the Old Vic, which had been enlarged in 1880 as the Royal Victoria Coffee Music Hall by Emma Cons. Of note is the present Waterloo Bridge under construction with a temporary bridge just downstream. The area of industrial buildings and wharves above County Hall (the offices of the GLC until 1986), was to be destroyed during the war and provided the site for the Festival of Britain Exhibition in 1951, which later became the South Bank Arts complex and Jubilee Gardens.
