Front elevation of Broomfield Lodge, later called Broomwood House, Clapham West Side, originally the seat of the Rt.Hon. Edward James Eliot. Designed by the architect, J.T.Groves, it was the residence from 1797 to1808 of William Wilberforce, who successfully campaigned against the slave trade as an MP in the late eighteenth century together with his friend and fellow MP, Henry Thornton, who lived nearby at Battersea Rise. They were both prominent members of the Clapham Sect, and a plaque commemorating Wilberforce still exists at 111 Broomwood Road.
