Front elevation of Broomfield Lodge, later called Broomwood House, Clapham West Side, shortly before demolition. Designed by the architect, J.T.Groves, it was the residence of William Wilberforce from the time of from his marriage in May 1797 until November 1808 when he moved to Kensington Gore. The origins of the Church Missionary Society began here in 1798 as well as the signing of the famous anti-slavery petition. Wilberforce and fellow MP Henry Thornton, who lived nearby at Battersea Rise, were both prominent members of the Clapham Sect, and a plaque commemorating Wilberforce still exists at 111 Broomwood Road.
