The National Registration Identity Card of Margaret Cooper, originally of Wedgwood House, China Walk in Lambeth, used during World War II. The carrying of these cards was compulsory, as was the notification of any change of address. Margaret Cooper recalls the V2 rocket that fell on the adjacent Surrey Mansions: “Everything went quiet; and then the doors on my Mum’s flat were all blown open; and every bit of china was all split down the sides. When we looked out through the kitchen window in China Walk and we saw the flats just flattened, that’s where all the people got killed, and the little shops underneath; and it was all lit up because the Americans that were stationed there had brought their floodlights and were getting people out; and my Dad was over there helping.”Digital image by kind permission of Mrs Margaret Cooper.
