The rocket was named the ‘Vergeltungswaffe (Revenge weapon) No 2’. 1,050 rockets fell on Southern England from September 1944 to March 1945 and 2,754 people were killed by them, with 6,523 wounded. The V2 bombings only ceased when the Canadian Army advanced into Northern Holland, over-running the rocket sites. Four V2s fell on Lambeth, the worst incident was on the 4th January 1945 at Surrey Lodge Dwellings in Lambeth Road, killing 39 people. The allies were most anxious to secure the technology and the technicians associated with this new weapon as the German army retreated. Today’s space technology originated with these rockets.
