Those civilians not enlisted in the armed forces were encouraged to join various Civil Defence organisations that also included; the Air Raid Precaution (ARP), Auxillary Fire Service (AFS), the Police Reserve and the Auxillary Ambulance Service. Stanley Rothwell was an artist and a male model before the war and joined the ARP section of Lambeth&#8217;s Civil Defence service in 1939. He wrote of his wartime experiences in his memoir, &#8216;Lambeth at War&#8217; published in 1981.
