Eagle House was the home of William Edgar, founder in 1820 of the Swan and Edgar department store at Piccadilly Circus. It was demolished after the death of his widow in 1889, except for one wing (now in Narbonne Avenue) and the grounds were developed with terraced housing. Henry Deane was the local chemist and a keen amateur photographer. His pictures are the earliest photographic record of Clapham and his shop at 17 The Pavement, still survives today. In 1843 he married Jemima Elliott, who ran a school at Weimar House.
