‘The Young Astley’; John Astley performing acrobatics on horseback. John was the son of Philip Astley and a renowned equestrian rider as a boy, who later became a performer in ‘serious pieces of action’. He became a Director of Astley’s Amphitheatre in 1795. He opened a second theatre, the Olympic, on the site of the Aldwych in 1805. John died in Paris on the 19th November 1821, in the same house and bed in which his father had died 7 years earlier.
