‘Merbra Love’ by Asbestos at the Cans Festival, Leake Street, Waterloo – a zebra and mermaid hybrid. Irish-based Asbestos is known for his intricate one-of-a-kind artworks on plywood or tile which he places on public walls, although this makes them prone to theft. He does make an attempt to prolong their street life by using strong adhesives and placing them out of reach. Asbestos remarks: “You can’t get too high and mighty about what happens to your work when you put it up on the street, it’s all fair game. It’s up to me to make it as hard to get to so that it lasts as long as possible. It’s a game of cat and mouse and the more I put up, the more I learn how to make them last. I hope that anyone who has taken my work, did so because they really liked it and not because they wanted a few quid to get a new pair of trainers.” Cans Festival ran from 3rd-5th May and featured over 40 international artists.
