A plan of the Old Burial Ground in Lambeth High Street showing pencil annotations possibly associated with the transformation of this former graveyard into a recreation space. The buildings at the top are noted as Dead House and Mortuary, whilst the Watch House near the main entrance has an annexe marked ‘Old Lock-up’ – used to contain the drunk and disorderly. The ground was made up from land given c.1703 by Archbishop Tenison, and that later purchased by an Act of Parliament. The last burial here was in 1853 and after years of neglect, the Lambeth Vestry proposed in 1884 to turn the ground into a pleasure garden. It was extended in the 1930s to provide an entrance from Whitgift Street and was again landscaped with more attractive amenities in 1986.
