As archbishop to Henry VIII he held considerable power, but upon the succession to the throne of Queen Mary in 1553, he was detained at Lambeth Palace virtually as a prisoner before being sent to the Tower. He was sentenced to death and died at the stake in Oxford in 1556. Engraved by H.B.Hall from a drawing by J.
