The World War II Deep Level Shelter built beneath the Northern Line under Clapham Common, opened in July 1944. This notice informs visitors at the base of the entrance steps in Balham Hill the way to the canteen, medical aid post, and the eight of the sixteen shelters designed to accommodate 8,000 people during air raids. This shelter complex is the best preserved of the eight London deep level shelters. It was used to accommodate Caribbean immigrants arriving on the ‘Empire Windrush’ in 1948 and also became a hostel for use during the Festival of Britain.
