The World War II Deep Level Shelter built beneath the Northern Line under Clapham Common was opened in July 1944. This is the No.10 Shaft and entrance on Clapham Common Southside and the public were requested to use the 187 stairs to access the sixteen dormitory shelter areas beneath. Designed to accommodate 8,000 people during air raids, many of the original bunk beds are still in situ and the shelters were named in alphabetical order after British Admirals. This shelter complex is the best preserved of the eight WWII London deep level shelters. It was used to accommodate Caribbean immigrants arriving on the ‘Empire Windrush’ in 1948 and also became a hostel for use during the Festival of Britain.
