Arthur Helps lived at Balham Hill and was educated at Eaton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was to rise in society to become one of the most influential men in the country. After a distinguished career in\u00a0 the Civil Service he became Clerk to Privy Council in 1860. Following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Helps became a key adviser and friend to Queen Victoria. In 1870 Helps introduced the Queen to the celebrated author Charles Dickens.\u00a0 Photograph of painting by G. Richmond.\u00a0\u00a0Ref.
