The ‘Haunted’ House in Hercules Road, Lambeth, near Homer Street. The accompanying text states it was a Tudor house opposite the Pineapple Chapel decorated with heads of a king and queen and vaulted ceilings, although at the time of this photograph the rooms were partitioned off for the use of poor tenants. It was claimed that the Archbishop of Rochester resided there, or Fisher, Bishop of Carlisle. The building later became a pottery, a tavern, a dancing school, an academy for gentlemen eventually becoming dilapidated. An Italian sculptor then took the ruins, building chapel and he ‘preserved what he could of the ancient relics of the past, and added judicious ornaments in stucco and carved work here and there’. It was recorded on 9th April 1903 prior to demolition by South Western Railways. Ref: 12\/ Tan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
