13 Handen Road c.1888 (Stanley Unwin at the gate)

The substantial houses in Manor Park were built between 1860 and 1885, this pair in the mid 1860s. The early inhabitants included retired naval officers, City merchants and clerks, and people of independent means. Most households had two or more domestic servants.

The modest terraced houses in Lochaber Road were built in the 1890s on what had been part of the garden of The Firs.

23 69 (rear) Fludyer St, Lee

This house was built about 1870 and from then until 1928 was occupied by doctors, who presumably had their consulting rooms on the premises. It was taken over by the Kent County Permanent Building Society about 1933. The house was demolished in the 1970s.

Algernon Road was developed through the 1880s and 1890s and long rows of these houses still remain, though some were demolished by bombing. The houses here on the west side are so new that some are not yet occupied, and the east side of the road has not yet been built.
