The Elms was built as a farmhouse, probably in the 1780s, after the partial demolition of the Tudor mansion known as Place House, where the farmer had lived until then. The bay windows were added c.1870. The gradual break-up of the old Place House farm after 1850 made much of western Catford available for building.
The Paragon was designed by Michael Searles for John Cator, and built between 1795 and 1806. Intended for the upper middle class, the linked pairs of houses provided room for carriages, stables, servant's quarters and large gardens. After 1914 several became hotels or boarding houses. Severely damaged during World War ll, they were restored by Charles Bernard Brown between 1949 and 1958 and were converted into flats. Engraving published by Rock & Co., 11th August 1864.

Dartmouth Place, the row of cottages adjoining the Dartmouth Arms, became Forest Hill's first shopping centre soon after the opening of the station in 1839. By the 1890s it was fully organised top guard commuters against the weather, with Campion's hard wearing boots at 29 Dartmouth Road flanked by Day's umbrella shop at 31.
