Ladywell Bridge From Recreation Grounds 6 Oct 1898
For much of its short history the dead population of Ladywell has outnumbered the living. The Lewisham (now Ladywell) and Deptford (now Brockley) cemeteries were opened in 1858 in response to public anxiety over crowded urban churchyards. Originally separated by a wall, they were merged in 1965.
The houses in Ladywell Road, then called Baines Villas, had probably been built in 1858 as a response to the railway's arrival. On the left is Ladywell Road and the bridge over the Ravensbourne. The line of fence-posts shows the river bank. On the south side, animals graze on what is not yet Ladywell (Fields) Recreation Ground. In the foreground is the garden attached to Ladywell Station and in the distance are Lewisham Congregational Church and the back of Lewisham House.

Ladywell Station on the Mid Kent Railway line from Lewisham via Lower Sydenham to Beckenham (now Beckenham Junction) opened in 1857. The station gradually developed a commuter traffic to London, though the surrounding area was not built up until the turn of the century. The original station building, seen on the right hand side, has largely survived.
Laurel Cottage was one of the false starts in Catford's development. The house was built in the early 1870s and demolished in 1889 to make way for Prendergast's School (now itself replaced by Kaleidoscope). The only occupant was C. T. Williams, the job master, whose services as a removal man must have been useful in the growing suburb, but education took precedence.
