HERBERT MORRISON

Herbert Stanley Morrison, Baron Morrison of Lambeth. (1888-1965). Labour Cabinet Minister, Mayor of Hackney, member of the London County Council, Labour MP, Minister of Transport, Home Secretary who created National Fire Service, Lewisham MP, Leader of the House of Commons, Foreign Secretary, Deputy Prime Minister, Leader of the London Labour Party. He was born in Brixton at 240 Ferndale Road and left school at fourteen to be an errand boy, later becoming a shop assistant and switchboard operator. The Morrison Shelters, used in World War II, were named after him. Photograph of a pastel drawing.
