LAMBETH PALACE, LAMBETH

LAMBETH PALACE, LAMBETH

Cardinal Morton's Tower, gateway to Lambeth Palace, residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Showing St. Mary's Church tower on the right, and the entrance to the Bishops Walk on the left. Charles Woolley's 1915 record for this photograph states: 'The open space in front of the Morton Gateway had its level raised for Albert Embankment purposes, and the gateway was dwarfed in consequence, a visible distraction in fact and spirit. The open space of Palace Yard was partially used, as well as part of Lambeth Road, by the Welsh Community, which congregated in Old Swan Yard, for a kind of fair and fairing on St David's Day.'Photographed using the 'wet plate' method by William Strudwick (1834-1910).
