St Anne's church, formerly the South Lambeth Chapel built in 1793 with £3,000 donated by local merchants. The building was badly damaged by fire in 1856 and in 1869 the chapel was purchased by the Church Commissioners and reconsecrated as St Anne's. It was altered and enlarged in 1876 after complaints that the church was 'a very unecclesiastical Georgian edifice'. The bomb damage it suffered in a 1941 air raid destroyed the stained glass memorial window to Anne Beaufoy of the local distillery family, whom it is claimed, inspired the church's dedication to St Anne.
