A pathway in Kennington Park. The seven-year battle to create the park on the site of Kennington Common was mainly undertaken by Mr Oliver Davis of No.5 The Terrace. Some 200 copyholders with rights to the Common needed to be traced and an Act of Parliament had to be passed, but with the help of Mr Adam, Rev. Charlton Lane and Prince Albert, he succeeded in 1851. To obtain the necessary Act, the government insisted that the area was enclosed and £1,000 was raised for railings, with Prince Albert contributing £200. The London County Council acquired the park from the Duchy of Cornwall in 1889. It was the first public open space in Lambeth and was run by the Council from 1971. Postcard, c.1910.
