Henry Cavendish, (1731-1810). An eccentic scientist, grandson of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire. A chemist and physicist who researched into nature of gases, he discovered the chemical composition of water and is noted for his famous experiment of weighing the world. He turned his large mansion - 'Cavendish House', Clapham Common South Side, into a vast laboratory and lived there the life of a recluse. Printed reproduction of a watercolour painting by an unknown artist in Burgess's 'Chronicles of Clapham'.
