BRIXTON ROAD, BRIXTON CENTRAL : NIGHT WATCHMAN

R.Stokes, the last of the old 'Charleys' or night watchmen, predecessors of the 'Peelers'. Seen dressed in a thick overcoat with attached capes, he wears a sword and carries a constable's staff, rattle and a tin and horn lantern. The brick night watchman's box, behind him, was surmounted by a bell and located outside No.160 Brixton Road.
