The Workshops of the Second Marquis of Worcester and Vauxhall (1601-1667). An artists impression of the layout of the works where he invented his 'Water-commanding Engine' using the principles of hydraulics. Originally an ordinance factory established by Charles I, it was bought by the Marquis in 1639. The site is now marked by the Albert Embankment. Illustration from a transcript of the talk given by W.H.Thorpe at the Hall of the Institute of Patent Agents, February 15th 1933.
