OLD HORSEFERRY, LAMBETH

OLD HORSEFERRY, LAMBETH

The Old Horseferry on Millbank, looking east across the Thames towards Lambeth Palace and St.Mary's Church. Horseferry Stairs was situated at the end of Horseferry Road at Millbank. Andrew Ducarel noted in 1758: 'The Archbishops had the ferry boat at Lambeth - which they granted by patents to some of their officers. They received annually for many years only 20 pence, but of late 10 pounds. Upon the finishing of Westminster Bridge the ferry boat ceased and an equivalent in money was given to Archbishop Herring for the same, & to Mr Folkes the surviving patentee for his interest in it'. From a watercolour by I.J.Smith, in the Crowle Pennant, Vol.II, September 28th 1778.
