The residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Bishop's Walk as seen from the River Thames. Note the horse ferry crossing the river, which is remembered in the name Horseferry Road, Westminster. Andrew Ducarel noted in 1758: 'The Archbishops had the ferry boat at Lambeth - which they granted by patents to some of their officers. They received annually for many years only 20 pence, but of late 10 pounds. Upon the finishing of Westminster Bridge the ferry boat ceased and an equivalent in money was given to Archbishop Herring for the same, & to Mr Folkes the surviving patentee for his interest in it'.
