The station was opened in December 1856 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR). Originally the station was named Streatham Station and when a new station opened in 1868 near Gleneagle Road, was re-named Streatham and Brixton Hill, which was ammended the following year to Streatham Hill. The barn like structure of the station has seen few alterations since it was built.
