Possibly an entrance to original Caron almshouses on Wandsworth Road. These were founded in 1618 by Noel de Caron to accommodate seven women aged over 60 and built on the west side of Wandsworth Road. In 1853 this site was acquired by Price's Patent Candle Company for £1,500 on the condition the purchase price was used to build new almshouses in Fentiman Road. Price's sold the Wandsworth Road site in 1865 to the Phoenix Gas Light & Coke Company.
