CARON ALMSHOUSES, WANDSWORTH ROAD, VAUXHALL

Front elevation with entrance to Caron's almshouses in Wandsworth Road. These were founded in 1618 by Noel de Caron to accommodate seven women aged over 60 and built on the west side of Wandsworth Road. In 1853 the dwellings had become 'uncomfortable and unsuitable' and the site was acquired by Price's Patent Candle Company for £1,500 on condition that the purchase price was then used to build new almshouses in Fentiman Road. Price's sold this Wandsworth Road site in 1865 to the Phoenix Gas Light & Coke Company.
