Sir Henry M.Stanley, (1841-1904). He started from humble beginnings which included the workhouse, and worked his way to New Orleans as a cabin boy on a ship. He was educated and employed by Henry Morton Stanley and adopted his name though he did not inherit anything from his benefactor and made money by selling newspapers on the streets. Later he became a reporter for the New York Herald, and was commissioned in 1871 to find David Livingstone in Africa. Following his return to London, Stanley was elected M.P. for Lambeth betwen 1895 and 1900. Photograph from 'The House Flag', L.C.C.Norwood Technical Institute Magazine, No.2, September 1937.
