BROOMFIELD LODGE, CLAPHAM COMMON WEST SIDE, CLAPHAM

Plan of Broomfield Lodge, later called Broomwood House, Clapham West Side, originally the seat of the Rt.Honble.Edward James Eliot. It was later the residence of William Wilberforce, who successfully campaigned against the slave trade as an MP in the late eighteenth century together with his friend and fellow MP, Henry Thornton, who lived nearby at Battersea Rise. They were both prominent members of the Clapham Sect, and a plaque commemorating Wilberforce still exists at 111 Broomwood Road. The house was demolished in April 1904 and the site redeveloped with flats.
