CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834-92, is considered by some to be the greatest preacher of the Victorian period; the Metropolitan Tabernacle, near Elephant and Castle, was built to accommodate the huge congregations he drew. With the help of a gift from Anne Hillyard, widow of an Anglican clergyman, he founded Stockwell Orphanage in 1867 for fatherless boys. In 1879 the work was expanded to include fatherless girls. When the new houses were completed he was looking after 250 boys and 250 girls. Original image and copyright held by Spurgeon's Child Care Trust.Ref: IV/243/1-6, SPd3472
