STOCKWELL ORPHANAGE: MAIN ENTRANCE

Close-up of the entrance gates to Stockwell Orphanage. On the right of the arch is the representation of a sword and a trowel engraved into a stone. This is an allusion to the magazine of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, 'Sword and Trowel', the August 1866 issue of which played a significant part leading to the foundation of the orphanage.
