The photograph, taken looking roughly north-eastwards, shows the boys' houses in July 1929. The boys' schoolrooms were on the top floor. In the foreground is the summer-house, which was the central feature of the quadrangle, and to the right the mound and fixed staging that was used to stage pageants and gymnastic drills at Festivals held each year on Founder's Day, a date near to Charles Haddon Spurgeon's birthday - 19 June.
