Damage to Stockwell Orphanage after a bomb fell at about 9.20 am on 29 September 1940. No children were affected as they had been evacuated to Surrey on 1 September 1939. A "dogfight" had swept over the district and a high explosive bomb was dropped into the quadrangle, falling on the edge of the boys' lawn about midway along the terrace of the boys' houses. The whole of the boys' houses and the Memorial Hall suffered severely, and windows were shattered all round the perimeter of the quadrangle. Fortunately, the few members of staff who had remained at Stockwell escaped injury. Further damage occurred in the second quarter of 1941 when a high explosive bomb wrecked part of the boys' playhall and demolished the handicraft room, wash-houses and lavatories.
