NORWOOD SCHOOLS, WEST NORWOOD

The Norwood Schools, West Norwood, stood on high ground occupying about nineteen acres and was built under the Poor Law as an industrial school. This view shows the superintendent, Mr Fielder and his wife at the main entrance. Well known for his connection with Dr.Bernardo's, he ran a strict but caring establishment without the evils associated with large institutions of this type. Published in an article entitled 'A Day in the Life of a Workhouse Child'.
