Norwood Schools, with a capacity to board seven hundred children who came under the operation of the Poor Law, was initially built as an industrial school and run as a strict but caring establishment. In addition to the ordinary elementary education the girls were taught cooking, laundry work, as well as cutting out and making clothes. This view shows the girls helping and being trained in the kitchen, including those past the school age who were being prepared for domestic service.Photograph from an article entitled 'A Day in the Life of a Workhouse Child'.
