Norwood Schools, with an intake of over seven hundred children who came under the operation of the Poor Law, was built initially as an industrial school and run as a strict but caring establishment. In addition to the ordinary elementary education girls were taught cooking, laundry work, as well as cutting out and making clothes. This view shows a sewing class where the girls are also taught how to use sewing machines.Photograph from an article entitled 'A Day in the Life of a Workhouse Child'.
