YORK HILL ESTATE, WEST NORWOOD

YORK HILL ESTATE, WEST NORWOOD

York Hill estate in West Norwood is an example of council flats built in the early 1950s on cleared bombsites. One of the bricklayers who built this block was William Norris, he lived opposite the site at No.22 which was also destroyed by a V1 flying bomb. The Norris family had to rely on charity after the bombing when the remains of their home were looted and possessions in storage stolen. Photographed on the 22nd February 2004.
