V1 ROCKET: WORLD WAR II

V1 ROCKET: WORLD WAR II

The V1 flying bombs, also known as 'Doodle Bugs' or 'Buzz' bombs, were launched against London from Northern France in June 1944. 148 V1s fell on Lambeth and one incident that killed 26 people by Lambeth Town Hall, was recalled by David Hamley; 'The air raid siren had gone and I heard this flying bomb come, I heard the engine cut out and I was peddling the bike and saw this huge thing come closer and closer... I saw all the blast and debris going up Acre Lane. When I came to...I was covered with a blanket and heard some rescue people saying 'there's another one over here'. From a series of albums containing newspaper and magazine clippings, assorted ephemera and a diary, kept by Mrs Lucy Awdry of 14 Franconia Road, Clapham, for the duration of World War II and recording wartime life in London. From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
