A plan of the 11th century 'Canute's Trench', showing several conjectured courses. When Edmund Ironside was proclaimed king, Canute sailed a fleet to take London, but was blocked by the fortification of the bridge. Supposedly a canal was then cut through the marshes on the south side to enable the Danish fleet to pass to the West. The plan also shows the Civil War forts of 1642.Engraving from Thomas Allen's 'History and Antiquities of the Parish of Lambeth', 1826.
