COSTUME DESIGNS, SURREY THEATRE, BLACKFRIARS ROAD, WATERLOO

Surrey Theatre costume designs for 'gorgeous comic' Christmas pantomimes called 'The Moon Queen' and 'King Night; or Harlequin Twilight', written by Alfred Crowquill. The costumes are for King Knight, played by Mr J.W.Oliver, and the soldiers. The Surrey Theatre was in Blackfriars Road, adjacent to St Georges' Circus. Crowquill was the pseudonym of Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872) a prolific writer and illustrator, working for the 'Hive', the 'Mirror' as well as 'Punch' magazine. He also wrote children's books, burlesques and became an important figure as artistic director for many London pantomimes.Watercolour and ink drawing, probably by Alfred Crowquill, undated.
