A class photograph from Jessop Road School showing children with assorted toys. Third from the left in the front row is Doris Bird who lived at 43 Lowden Road and recalls that many in the class were from relatively poor families and quite dishevelled. She also remembers a teacher asked that the pupils stop using their sleeves to wipe their noses and insisted upon a handkerchief, something that her family could not afford. Her mother therefore cut up an old pillowcase, although occasionally one found on the pavement would be boiled for reuse, but Doris did not approve if given a recycled one. Her sister Kathleen is the missing face, cut out by their mother for use in a collage.Digital image by kind permission of Doris Overy (née Bird).
