View north from under the raised walkway adjacent to the Festival Hall with the Hayward Gallery behind. The Hall was originally built as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951 at a cost of £2 million, to a design by the L.C.C. architect, Robert Matthew. Extensive improvements and additions were undertaken to the Hall in 1962-65 by Hubert Bennett, these walkways were also added then. The Hayward was opened by HM The Queen in 1968 and is renown for its striking architectural design by the GLC Department of Architecture, led by Geoffrey Horsefall.Photograph by M.D.Trace, August 1970.
