Granville Sharp (1735-1813) was considered the Patriarch of the Clapham Sect. He lived at 14 North Side and worked tirelessly for the whole of his life for the abolition of slavery. He succeeded in winning freedom for Jonathan Strong and later in the famous Somersett case, to secure victory in a seminal judgment from Lord Mansfield. He was keen to work for the abolition of slavery altogether, whilst other members of the Sect urged a stepped approach, challenging abolition of the trade before complete abolition.Print from 'These Remarkable Men' by John A.
