MURAL BY CHARLES MAHONEY, MORLEY COLLEGE, LAMBETH NORTH

Detail showing Melpomene from the mural by Cyril [Charles] Mahoney (1903 -1968) titled 'The Pleasures of Life in Work and Play (Scenes of London Life)' in the Prince of Wales' Hall, Morley College, Lambeth North. The mural was part of a scheme for artists arranged by Mrs Eva Hubback, the Principal, with advice from Sir John Rothenstein. Funding of £1,300 was received in 1928 from Sir Joseph Duveen for murals and Mahoney was commissioned, along with Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden, to paint the public spaces at the college. The official unveiling was by the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin in 1930. They became some of the most influential British murals of the time, but were unfortunately destroyed by bombing in the 1940 Blitz.Photograph from Morley College Album, dated 1929.
