Mural by Edward Bawden (1903-1989) and Eric Ravilious (1903-42) in the Florence Acton Refreshment Room at Morley College, Lambeth North. This detail shows Bawden's scenes from, left: 'As You Like It', right: 'Romeo and Juliet' and centre: Britannia crowning William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. The mural was part of a scheme for artists arranged by Mrs Hubback, the Principal, with advice from Sir John Rothenstein. Funding of £1,300 was received in 1928 from Sir Joseph Duveen for murals and they were commissioned, along with Cyril [Charles] Mahoney, to paint the public spaces at the college. The official unveiling was by the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin in 1930. They became some of the most influential British murals of the time, but were unfortunately destroyed by bombing in the 1940 Blitz. Photograph from Morley College Album, dated 1929.
